A lift cable runs from a bracket at the bottom of the door up to a grooved drum on the torsion shaft. As the springs unwind, the drums turn and wind the cables in, and the door rises evenly on both sides. Everything about the system depends on both cables carrying the same load at the same rate. Lose that symmetry and the door immediately starts to rack in the opening.
Cables fail for predictable reasons. Water sitting on a concrete floor rusts the bottom few inches over years. A door that is left resting on an obstruction goes slack and the cable jumps the drum groove. Bottom brackets that have loosened let the cable angle change and it saws against the drum flange. None of these are dramatic on day one, which is why the fraying is usually well advanced by the time anyone notices.
A door that is hanging low on one side is not a cosmetic problem. It is putting a twisting load through the tracks, the rollers, the hinges and the top section, and every cycle makes the damage a bit worse. A jammed door under spring tension can also drop suddenly if the remaining cable lets go, which is the situation nobody wants a car or a person underneath.
Our advice when you notice it is simple. Stop using the door, pull the emergency release so the opener cannot make it worse, and call. Forcing a racked door back into line by running the opener is how a cable job turns into a cable, track, roller and top section job.
We replace cables in pairs for the same reason we replace springs in pairs. Both were fitted on the same day and have carried the same load, so the intact one is not far behind. Cable is inexpensive and the labour is the same visit either way.
